Yoga Terms - What Do Common Yoga Terms Mean?

A newcomer to the yoga world will undoubtedly be faced with terms they have never heard of. Asana, Pranayama, Vinyasa, Kundalini. While seasoned yogis and practitioners are accustomed to such terms, and many know what all of them mean, for a beginner, they are terms of a foreign language that don't hold much personal connection.  Yoga roots itself deeply in eastern cultures and finds its origin in the Sanskrit language. From this language, we receive the terms that we hear so often during a yoga practice.  For a better understanding of the meaning behind some of the most common yoga terms, read on for a brief explanation.  Common Yoga Terms Some of the most common yoga terms will not be foreign to you, but the meaning of them may still be out of grasp. When we talk about common yoga terms, we are referring to the ones you generally hear in most practices. They include asana, vinyasa, chakra, pranayama, and more. How To Get The Most Out Of Your Yoga Practice

Lately, I’ve been asked a lot of questions surrounding yoga and how to improve one’s practice. Do I have any advice for…? From how to start a yoga practice to how to have my body back after pregnancy to how to grow and improve flexibility and strength and make it easy, I’ve been asked it all.  As an instructor, the best advice I am able to give has always been the same: Listen to your body, play with your practice and use your breath.  I’ll run through each of these and then pull it all together with an example at the end so keep reading!   Listening to Your Body: Whether you’re just beginning or a seasoned yogi , your body is always giving you feedback. It’s telling you when you’re approaching or at your limits (it feels like you’re straining and you’ll find your breath is tight or you’re holding it entirely). This is your body’s way of saying “no” which means we need to respect where we are at and play this. You’ll often hear this referred to as “your edge”. Breathe In...

Higher Health Yoga - How a Movement Practice Can Help You Achieve Better Health

Our physical and mental health are tied together in more ways than many people can imagine. An anxious mind and a body stuck in fight or flight can have trouble finding a sense of calm.  Higher health yoga is an idea that by practicing the principles taught within yoga, we can find a greater sense of calm in our mind and body, which can help our body naturally remain in a state of health.  Healing Meditation in Motion Many people believe that we can heal our bodies using our minds. Although that is still a heavily debated topic, it is no secret that by creating a more relaxed and healthy inner atmosphere, our body can keep potential sicknesses at bay more easily.  Whenever you meditate, you are participating in a mindfulness practice that naturally leads your body towards healing. According to  this article  published by Healthline.com, meditation is scientifically proven to help lower blood pressure, decrease cortisol, and reduce inflammation.  Yoga...

The Benefits and How to of Headstands (Salamba Sirsasana) - With Pictures

You've definitely seen the social media posts on inversions - headstands, handstands, elbow stands, and all kinds of arm balances. But what are the benefits of headstands? And, how do you do them? They make Yoga look elegant and fancy, and they take some practice, but headstands, in particular, are attainable by any yogi!  Why do we flip upside down and try to stand on our heads? Admittedly, most yogis you see do it for fun. What's not to love about being upside down and playing on the mat?  The Benefits of Headstands The largest benefit from a purely physiological point of view is that it helps blood flow return to the heart. Our bodies have miles and miles of veins - little blood vessels with one-way valves that help return the blood to the heart. The valves help ensure one-way flow, returning deoxygenated blood back to the heart despite gravity. A headstand, or other inversions, means that venous flow now works with gravity. If you have varicose veins, inversions are helpfu...
